The Boston Red Sox defeated the Cincinnati Reds, 5-3, in Federal League action at Riverfront Stadium, with Boston pitcher John Smiley named player of the game. Tom Henke got the save, his 19th in 23 chances.

Hector Villanueva aided the Boston cause with a 2-run single in the top of the fifth. For the game, the catcher was 1-4, while adding 2 RBI.

"I like seeing our guys get a return on what they've put in," said Boston manager Kevin Patterson.

Boston is now riding a 4-game win streak.
