Benefiting from Kelly Gruber's productive game, the Oakland Athletics downed the San Diego Padres, 6-4. Gruber was 3-4 with a home run and 2 singles, while adding 3 RBI and scoring once for the Athletics. Danny Cox picked up the win with 6.1 innings of work. He allowed 4 earned runs on 8 hits, while walking 1 and striking out 3. On the season, he is now 2-1. Bill Caudill notched his 25th save in 30 chances.

Tied up with the Padres in the bottom of the sixth inning, the Athletics got a boost from designated hitter Ralph Bryant. With runners on 1st and 2nd, Bryant saw a 2-0 changeup from Bill Landrum and hit a run-scoring single to break the stalemate and put Oakland on top, 5-4.

"I'm just happy to help the team win," Bryant told the Oakland Chronicle.

The Athletics' win now puts them at 49-45.
