Red Sox Lose to Braves, 7-5
|
The Boston Red Sox got a superb performance from right fielder Tony Gwynn, but the Atlanta Braves still won the game, 7-5. Gwynn was named the player of the game despite the loss. He was 2-5 with a home run and a double. He drove in 3 runs and scored once. Roger Pavlik picked up the win with 6.1 innings of work. He allowed 5 earned runs on 7 hits, while walking 3 and striking out 9. On the season, he is now 5-3. Mark Wohlers earned his 20th save in 23 chances.
With no one out in the bottom of the first, Kevin Mitchell had a game-changing hit. The Braves third baseman slammed a 3-run home run off Todd Stottlemyre, making the score 3-0, Atlanta.
"We took advantage of our opportunities," Mitchell told the Atlanta Herald. "It's as simple as that."
The Braves' win now puts them at 54-56.
