Multi-HR Day for McGwire as Tigers Overpower Dodgers, 7-5
|
A 6-RBI performance from Mark McGwire, who is tied for 3rd in the UL in runs scored with 80, helped the Detroit Tigers beat the Los Angeles Dodgers, 7-5. Danny Jackson went 6 innings for Detroit to pick up the win. The left-hander was charged with 5 earned runs. He scattered 8 hits, while walking 1 and striking out 5. His record improves to 11-9. Bob James converted his 28th save in 29 tries.
With Detroit trailing 4-3 in the top of the sixth, McGwire hit a grand slam home run off Los Angeles hurler Bob Patterson. It was the 41st home run of the season for McGwire and put his team ahead, 7-4.
"Winning breeds more winning, I guess," said McGwire.
The second-place Tigers have won 8 in a row.
