The Yankees grabbed a win, 3-2, at Royals Stadium, overcoming a fine effort from Kansas City pitcher Rick Reed. Reed went 8 innings and allowed 3 earned runs. Jim Abbott earned the win to go to 4-4. He allowed 2 earned runs on 7 hits, with 1 walk and 2 strikeouts. Wes Gardner earned his 20th save in 23 chances.
With New York leading 2-0 in the top of the sixth, Don Mattingly hit a solo home run off Kansas City pitcher Rick Reed. It put the Yankees ahead 3-0.
"We'll pop the top on a cold one and get back to work tomorrow," Mattingly said.
New York occupies 5th place in the Federal League East Division at 50-69.
