Sun Rays Get Road Win, 9-5
|
Atlanta got a terrific game from right fielder Bernard Gilkey. It wasn't enough, though, to prevent the team from falling to Orlando, 9-5. Gilkey was the player of the game despite being on the losing side. He went 2-3 with a home run, a double, and 2 walks. He scored 3 runs. David West got the win, improving to 8-4. He pitched 6.1 innings, giving up 5 hits and 4 runs, while striking out 8 and walking 3. At 70-54, the Sun Rays are currently second in the Federal League East Division.
With runs few and far between, the Sun Rays had to seize their opportunities when they came. One of the most important chances for Orlando came in the top of the second inning, when shortstop Jose Hernandez delivered a bases-clearing double. The double was hit off Roger Pavlik and made the score 4-1, Sun Rays. Hernandez went 2 for 5 with a home run and a double. He drove in 4 runs and scored once.
"The name of the game is scoring runs," Hernandez said. "We did a good job of that today."
