Close Win Moves Cardinals to 76-51
|
The St. Louis Cardinals and Chicago Cubs put on a pitchers' duel at Wrigley Field.
The St. Louis Cardinals scored a 2-1 win versus the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field. St. Louis pitcher Dave Fleming nabbed top player honors in the tight contest. Fleming, now 17-8, was the winner. In 6.2 innings, he gave up 8 hits, while striking out 8, walking 1, and allowing 1 earned run.
With two out in the top of the fourth, John Valentin had a game-changing hit. The Cardinals third baseman slammed a run-scoring double off Willie Banks, making the score 1-0, St. Louis.
"We'll savor this win," Fleming told the St. Louis Citizen, "then get ready for the next game."
The 'W' lifts St. Louis's record to 76-51.
