Tigers Subdue San Francisco, 5-4
|
Despite a great performance by San Francisco left fielder Moises Alou, the Detroit Tigers defeated the Giants by the score of 5-4 at Candlestick Park. Alou went 1 for 4 with a home run, while adding 3 RBI and scoring once. Bob James earned his 34th save in 35 chances. Detroit is now 72-60, San Francisco 66-67.
The Tigers beat the Giants in part due to timely hitting. Case in point: the two-out double Spike Owen produced in the top of the sixth. Batting against San Francisco pitcher Butch Henry, Owen gave his team a 5-4 lead when he hit a 2-run double.
"I like the grit of this ballclub," Owen said.
