Red Sox Come Back Late to Top Braves
|
The Boston Red Sox beat the Atlanta Braves, 8-5, at Atlanta Fulton County Stadium. Boston center fielder Shane Mack earned player of the game honors with an outstanding performance. He went 3 for 4 with 3 singles and a walk. He scored 3 times. Tom Henke was credited with the save. He has now successfully converted 27 of 32 save opportunities. Boston goes to 78-57. The win puts them 3 games up in their division.
Boston took the lead in the top of the eighth on a big hit from Matt Williams. On a first pitch splitter from Roberto Hernandez, Williams hit a 3-run home run. That made it 7-4, Red Sox. For the day, Williams went 1-4 with a home run. He drove in 4 runs and scored once.
In postgame comments to the Boston Chronicle, Williams said, "If the effort is there, the wins will come."
