Athletics Win in Extras
|
The Oakland Athletics grabbed a 9-6 win over the Seattle Pilots at Kingdome. Oakland third baseman Kelly Gruber went 3-4 with a home run and 2 singles. He scored 2 times and drove in 3 to earn player of the game honors. Oakland reliever Brent Gaff picked up the win, upping his record to 2-0. Darren Holmes was saddled with the loss. Bill Caudill got the save, his 38th in 44 chances.
Oakland took the lead in the top of the tenth on a big hit from Jose Oquendo. On a first pitch curveball from Guy Hoffman, Oquendo hit a 2-run double. That made it 8-6, Athletics. For the day, Oquendo went 1 for 5 with a double, while adding 2 RBI and scoring once.
"We'll relax tonight and get back after it tomorrow," Oquendo said after the game.
Oakland is in third place in the United League West Division with a record of 69-66.
