Sun Rays Rally Past Cardinals to Claim 1-0 Series Lead
|
The Orlando Sun Rays started the Division Series in dramatic fashion today, stealing Game 1 from the St. Louis Cardinals in a walk-off. Orlando won 5-4 behind a good day from starter David West. The left-hander threw 6 innings of 2-hit ball in the win, which gave the Sun Rays a 1-0 lead to start the best-of-7 series.
The Sun Rays were down to their last out in the bottom of the ninth when designated hitter Will Clark turned a 2-2 curveball from Steve Chitren into a 2-run double. The walk-off double sent a roar through the crowd and gave Orlando a thrilling 5-4 win.
"I'm glad I could get it done when the game was in the balance," Clark said in his postgame press conference.
Game 2 is set to be played tomorrow at Orlando Citrus Bowl in Orlando. The scheduled starters for the game are Doug Drabek for St. Louis and John Smoltz for Orlando.
