Royals Hammered by Puckett, Drop Game 1 to Orioles
|
The Baltimore Orioles started the World Series in style today, winning on the road against the Kansas City Royals at Royals Stadium by a score of 6-5 to take an early 1-0 lead in the best-of-7 series. Orioles right fielder Kirby Puckett was named player of the game after he was 2 for 3 with a home run and a walk, while adding 3 RBI and scoring once.
Had Puckett not come through in the top of the eighth, the outcome might have changed. Instead, with two down, Puckett hit a 2-run single. The Orioles never looked back after taking the 6-5 lead.
"You never want to start a series with a loss, but I saw a lot of good things today," Royals manager Daniel Drucker said. "I'm not worrying. Yet."
The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Royals Stadium in Kansas City. The scheduled starters for the game are Dwight Gooden for Baltimore and Rick Reed for Kansas City.
