Athletics Win Thriller, 4-1
|
Seattle pitcher Chris Haney gave the Athletics all they could handle, but in the end, Oakland left Oakland Coliseum with a 4-1 win. Haney allowed no earned runs on 2 hits over 8 innings. Oakland reliever Bill Caudill picked up the win, upping his record to 2-2. Darren Holmes absorbed the loss. The win puts the Athletics at 74-70, while the Pilots drop to 86-58.
With one out in the bottom of the tenth, Ryne Sandberg lit into a curveball from Darren Holmes for a 3-run home run. That made the score 4-1 in favor of the Athletics. For the day, Sandberg went 1-4 with a home run and a walk. He scored 2 runs and drove in 3.
"We didn't go down without a fight," said Seattle manager Robert O'Neill.
