Padres Get Close Win Over Giants
|
San Diego right-hander Rod Nichols made an effective start against the San Francisco Giants at Jack Murphy Stadium, leading his team to a 3-1 win. San Diego is last in the United League West Division with a record of 55-91.
San Diego designated hitter Troy Neel said he was just trying to make contact when he came to bat with a runner on 3rd in the bottom of the eighth. He did more than that -- Neel hit a 2-run home run to stake San Diego to a 3-1 lead. His 35th home run of the season came off San Francisco pitcher Rusty Meacham.
"Winning the game is always the first objective," Nichols said.
