Cubs Score Late, Stun Cardinals, 3-2
|
Chicago and St. Louis played a hard-fought contest at Busch Stadium.
The Chicago Cubs defeated the St. Louis Cardinals, 3-2, in Federal League action at Busch Stadium, with Chicago pitcher John Mitchell named player of the game. Chicago reliever Frank DiPino picked up the win, upping his record to 12-7. Steve Chitren took the loss. Doug Jones converted his 43rd save in 53 tries.
It could have been a different outcome for Chicago, had it not been for Lloyd Moseby, the top prospect . Moseby contributed a run-scoring sacrifice fly in the top of the ninth inning to put Chicago up, 3-2.
"That's the key at this level, throwing strike one," said Mitchell. "Successful pitchers do it."
St. Louis has now lost 5 straight.
