Red Sox Score Late to Upend Pirates, 5-4
|
The Boston Red Sox picked up a win at Three Rivers Stadium, knocking off the Pittsburgh Pirates, 5-4. On the mound for Boston was right-hander Pete Harnisch, who played a pivotal role in the win. Harnisch went 8 innings to notch the win. He scattered 6 hits, walked 1, and struck out 8. His record improves to 8-3. Tom Henke converted his 32nd save in 38 tries.
A crucial at-bat came with runners on 1st and 3rd and one out in the top of the eighth inning. That's when designated hitter Barry Bonds, who led the FL in stolen bases with 113 in 1990, hit a run-scoring single. The Red Sox went on to win.
"It takes a lot of things to win a ballgame," said Boston manager Kevin Patterson. "It's usually not just one thing."
The first-place Red Sox have won 6 straight games.
