Red Sox Come Up Short at Pittsburgh
The inspired effort of Boston designated hitter Barry Bonds was not enough to prevent a 7-6 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates. Bonds went 3-5 with a home run and 2 singles. He scored 3 times and drove in 2. Pittsburgh reliever Jeff E. Gray picked up the win, upping his record to 1-2. Tom Gordon absorbed the loss. Bryan Harvey got the save, his 26th in 32 chances.

Andy Van Slyke swatted a run-scoring double for Pittsburgh in the bottom of the fifth. The first baseman went 2 for 3 for the game, including 1 home run and 1 double. He scored 1 run and batted in 3.

"We'll pop the top on a cold one and get back to work tomorrow," Van Slyke said.

With the victory, the Pirates record now stands at 65-90.
