Yankees Turn Back Reds, 4-2
|
Jose Rijo pitched well, but his team, the Cincinnati Reds, still dropped a 4-2 decision to the New York Yankees at Riverfront Stadium. Eric Plunk got credit for the win, improving to 11-13. He allowed 2 runs on 5 hits in 6.1 innings. With the win, the Yankees have a record of 66-90.
The Yankees got an important contribution from first baseman Don Mattingly, who in the top of the fourth hit a 0-1 fastball into left for a 2-run double. It was his 40th double of the season and put the Yankees ahead, 2-0.
"You can't get too high when things go well, or too low when things go bad. Right now, I'm just happy we got the win," Mattingly told the New York News.
