The New York Mets defeated the Washington Senators, 7-1, in United League action at Shea Stadium, with New York pitcher Paul Abbott named player of the game. The winning pitcher was Abbott, now 3-2. He tossed 8.2 innings of 3-hit ball, while walking 5 and fanning 5. The Mets, now 21-16, have won 4 in a row.
B.J. Surhoff put New York in front, 7-1, when he hit a 3-run home run off Bill Wegman in the bottom of the eighth. It was his 6th home run of the season.
