Pirates Rally For Late Win Over Red Sox
|
The Pittsburgh Pirates sent the home crowd home smiling from Three Rivers Stadium.
The Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Boston Red Sox, 6-5 at Three Rivers Stadium, in part due to designated hitter Bobby Bonilla, who nabbed player of the game honors. He was 2-4 with a home run, while adding 4 RBI and scoring once. Bob Patterson picked up the win in relief, improving his record to 1-0. Tom Gordon was tagged with the loss.
With a runner on 1st in the bottom of the ninth, Lance Blankenship delivered the knockout blow when he hit a walk-off run-scoring double to win it for Pittsburgh. In the contest, Blankenship was 1-4 with a double.
"We'll enjoy this win," said Blankenship. "But there's more we hope to accomplish."
The Pirates, now 20-18, know that wins in May count the same as wins in September.
