Cardinals Need Extras to Top Red Sox
|
The Cardinals had to overcome a good performance from Boston pitcher Erik Hanson to claim a 3-2 win at Fenway Park. Hanson went 8 innings and allowed no earned runs. Gregg Olson picked up the win in relief, improving his record to 4-0. John Wetteland was tagged with the loss. The save was Steve Chitren's, his 11th.
In the top of the 11th inning with no one out, St. Louis second baseman Craig Grebeck hit a run-scoring single. It made the score 3-2, Cardinals. For the day, Grebeck was 2 for 4 with a double and a walk.
In postgame comments to the St. Louis Citizen, Grebeck said, "If the effort is there, the wins will come."
With the win, the Cardinals have a record of 26-20.
