The St. Louis Cardinals beat the Pittsburgh Pirates, 11-8, at Busch Stadium. The Cardinals got a fine performance from third baseman John Valentin, who captured player of the game honors. He went 2-4 with a home run, a double, and a walk. He scored 2 runs and drove in 2. The winner was Jimmy Key, who threw 108 pitches over 6.2 innings. The left-hander was charged with 7 runs on 9 hits. The second-place Cardinals are now 27-20, the Pirates 24-25.
