Mets Edge Past Giants, 5-4
|
The San Francisco Giants got a superb performance from pitcher Jim Deshaies. Still, it wasn't enough to beat New York. The Mets won the game, 5-4. In spite of the loss, Deshaies was named the player of the game. He threw 8 innings of 7-hit ball. New York goes to 28-25, San Francisco to 27-27.
Tino Martinez's hit in the top of the ninth was a game-changer. With no one out, he rapped a fastball from Randy Myers for a solo home run. It put New York in front, 5-4.
"We'll enjoy this win," said Martinez. "But there's more we hope to accomplish."
