Blankenship Slugs Pirates to 4-3 Win
|
The Pittsburgh Pirates grabbed a 4-3 win over the Kansas City Royals at Three Rivers Stadium. Pittsburgh center fielder Lance Blankenship was 3 for 3 with 2 home runs and a walk to earn player of the game honors. Pittsburgh reliever Bob Scanlan picked up the win, upping his record to 1-0. Rick Reed was saddled with the loss. The 5th-place Pirates lifted their record to 25-29.
The Pirates got a lift from left fielder Craig Shipley, who in the bottom of the eighth stroked a first pitch changeup into center for a run-scoring single. It was his 65th hit of the season and put the Pirates ahead, 4-3.
"Winning the game is always the first objective," Shipley said.
