The Detroit Tigers got a rather unremarkable outing from starting pitcher Ramon J. Martinez, but it was good enough for the club to take a 9-3 decision over the Montreal Expos. Martinez, now 5-5, was the winner. In 7.1 innings, he gave up 6 hits, while striking out 10, walking 3, and allowing 3 earned runs. The Tigers are now 29-28, while the Expos fall to 20-37.

Dave Hollins drove in one run for Detroit. With no one out and the game tied in the top of the fourth inning, Hollins had a clutch at-bat. Facing Montreal hurler Pete Schourek, he reached on an error by the 2B, driving in 1 run to give the Tigers a 3-2 lead.

"The boys were really swinging the bats today," winning manager Julio Izquierdo said.
