Mets Prove Rude Guests, Win 7-3 at San Diego
|
New York designated hitter Tino Martinez was a significant contributor in his team's 7-3 triumph over the San Diego Padres. He slugged 2 home runs, while adding 3 RBI and scoring twice for New York. Frank Castillo picked up the win, improving his season record to 8-8. He struck out 6 in 8.2 innings. Lee Smith earned his 15th save in 18 tries.
There was more than one reason the Mets beat the Padres, but Martinez's big at-bat in the top of the second was an important factor. He staked his team to a 3-1 lead when he hit a 2-run home run.
In postgame comments to the New York Bulletin, Martinez said, "If the effort is there, the wins will come."
The Mets move to 40-34 with the win, while the Padres drop to 28-45.
