Pirates Drop Another One
|
Pittsburgh got a terrific performance from designated hitter Bobby Bonilla, but it wasn't enough to beat the Cincinnati Reds. Cincinnati won the Riverfront Stadium contest, 8-6. Bonilla was the player of the game despite being on the losing side. He went 2-5 with 2 home runs. He drove in 5 runs and scored twice. Scott Bankhead, the winner, improved to 5-6. He held the Pirates to 5 earned runs on 6 hits over 7 innings, while striking out 9 and walking 2. Todd Worrell, credited with the save, is now 8 for 11 in save opportunities.
Cincinnati first baseman Kevin McReynolds had a nice game. In the bottom of the fifth inning with two out, he belted a 3-run home run for the Reds. It made the score 8-6, Cincinnati. For the game, McReynolds went 2-4 with a home run, while scoring 2 runs and driving in 3.
"It wasn't our best performance," said McReynolds, "but a win in this league is nothing to sniff at."
Pittsburgh's current losing streak has reached 7 games.
