Closing In: Detroit Nears CS With Dramatic Game 5 Win
The Detroit Tigers needed some last-minute heroics to do it, but ultimately emerged one game away from the League Championship today. The Tigers got the 2-1 win against the Seattle Pilots in a walk-off at Tiger Stadium. Detroit right-hander Marty Bystrom was named player of the game after a solid outing in which he threw 9 innings of 5-hit ball. The win gives the Tigers a 3-2 advantage in the best-of-7 Division Series.

Tony Fernandez was the walk-off hero for Detroit. With the game tied in the bottom of the ninth inning, the Tigers shortstop hit a dramatic run-scoring single to send the teams home.

"We did just enough to win," Fernandez said.

The next game is scheduled for Tuesday, October 6th, 1992 in Seattle. Slated to start are Frank Viola for Detroit and Wally Whitehurst for Seattle.
