The New York Mets beat the Montreal Expos, 8-2, at Olympic Stadium. The Mets got a fine performance from shortstop Gary Sheffield, who captured player of the game honors. He was 4 for 4 with a double, 3 singles, and a walk. He drove in 2 runs and scored once. The Mets bumped their record to 72-66 with this latest triumph.

It could have been a different outcome for New York, had it not been for Tom Pagnozzi, the 30-year old catcher . Pagnozzi contributed a run-scoring single in the top of the fifth inning to put New York up, 4-2.

"Win or lose, we pick each other up in this clubhouse," Sheffield told the New York Bulletin.
